Woodpecker Repellant

December 22nd, 2009

Woodpeckers are a handsome bird, however they can become a problem when they have chosen your home as their feeding area. The constant noise is one of the problems. In addition to the aggravation, the holes they make in your home are another problem.

This requires a solution immediately to stop the woodpecker from making more holes in your home. The use of a repellent made especially for this purpose is often highly successful. Often suet feeders will help, especially for younger birds to switch their attention to another location. If you could get them to shift their attention to the suet feeder, they will stop making holes in your house.

Trying a non-toxic solution to fill the holes is another way you may deter the birds from pecking at your home. The holes are filled with the solution and the birds do not find this very tasty. Often they will move on to another area.

The use of visual methods to turn the attention of the woodpecker from your home is another way of removing these pesky birds. These visual aspects include flash tape which has shown success at encouraging these birds to move to other areas. Using a Mylar tape has been one of the proven methods.

The woodpecker has natural enemies such as the owl. By using recordings of this and other frightening sounds many people have gotten the birds to relocate. Gun shots are one of these noises. Using an owl decoy will often make the woodpecker decide it is time to leave. Just remember you have to move them around so the woodpecker does not see it in the same spot all the time.

By placing a post with suet in your yard a distance away from your home, you can often get the woodpecker to relocate. They feed on insects such as bees, termites and ants, so ridding your home of these bugs can help. There are sprays made for stopping these insects from making your home theirs as well.

Woodpeckers are a federally protected species so anything done to harm these birds can result in a large fine. Another deterrent that often will help is hanging wind chimes around the areas they are feeding. Use a metal type that is shiny as these birds tend to stay away from shiny objects. When they move as the wind blows catching the sun, this can be a good way of keeping these birds away.

The holes they make for nesting and searching for insects can ruin your home’s siding. The need for a solution to this problem is immediate. Hardware cloth placed over the wood can be one way of getting the woodpeckers to leave your home alone. Placing a pole with suet in your yard at the same time can help them to relocate elsewhere.

This has proven effective at keeping them permanently relocated after you remove the hardware cloth. By this time, hopefully they are already attached to their new location and will not returnto your home. Using patience when faced with this challenge can be the answer to getting the woodpecker to leave your home and feed elsewhere.
